WHY ARE DAVID LYNCH FILMS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

Because Lynch uses in his movies a non-liniar dramatic structure. He explores the inner worlds (the subtext of his characters) with surrealistic visual elements. Sound design and dream-like sequences distort and enhance the plot. The world in his movies has its own logic and own time period. He is also a painter and artist, so his emphasis is not so much on resolution of the plot or a “meaning”, but he explores in his unique voice atmosphere and emotions.

However, Lynch is influenced by filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, Luis Bunuel, Roman Polanski, and many more. They explored in similar fashion visual storytelling, dramatic structure and sound design.
